ISL Clubs Preview: Northeast United

By Aaron
13 November 2021

All eyes will be on this team as they are the first club to employ an Indian Head Coach for the upcoming ISL 21-22 season. Khalid proved every Indian Football fans wrong with his man-management and showed that he’s tactically on par with other ISL foreign head coaches.
Northeast wasted no time by retaining foreign players who performed well like Deshorn Brown, Khassa Camara and Federico Gallego and signed new players like Mathias Coureur, Hernan Santana from Mumbai City and Patrick Flottmann.

COACH AND PREFERRED FORMATION

We have already seen how Khalid can do wonders. He prefers a 4-4-2 setup in which on possession it turns into a 4-2-1-3 where the second striker comes deep into the attacking midfield position and has a free role to pass to wings and cross it inside the box. The striker must have good positional abilities & heading ability to convert into goals. During an out-of-possession stage, 4-4-2 shape is employed with counter-press involved. Keeping the shape is important. If the ball is won when opponent’s position is unstable, counter attack is initiated.

STRENGTH

Northeast has decent depth in almost all departments. They have experienced Subhashish for guarding their post. Mirshad will be the second choice. They also strengthened their defence by adding Irshad, Jestin and Patrick. Along with their experienced and energetic last year defenders, these players can do wonders. Versatile player Gurjinder will be playing in the left flank while Joe Zoherliana will be playing in the right. So, at a glance they have a pretty good defence in paper.

In Midfield, players have to work hard to find their place in the squad. Camara has tight competition for finding his playing 11 as DM, after the inclusion of versatile playe Hernan who can also manage to play in the back too. Imran will be the Indian partner for them. In centre, they have Sehnaj and Lalrempuia Fanai. Rochharzela and Gallego will assist their attacking department. These two players can be deadly, if they perform well.

Last year Deshorn Brown had a great performance with North East on loan from Bengaluru. His performance convinced the management to keep him with them. Mathias, their new incoming, is a workhorse who could play in any position. His pressing is a plus for the team. With his good heading skills, he could be useful during set-piece situations and he could come deep and get involved with the ball to initiate attacks. Indian striker VP Suhair has the ability to take advantage of mistakes by opposition defenders. They also have some young prospects who can do surprises.

WEAKNESS

Covering for the departure of Apuia and Ashutosh will be a difficult feat to handle. Players like Imran, Sehnaj and Lalrempuia Fanai can cover for Apuia but how they will perform can only be observed by playing matches. They also lack an experienced Central Midfielder. We have to watch how they play with their available players. It will be interesting who would be covering for Ashutosh as he had a playing role under Khalid. Joe Zoherliana could cover in the RB position for Ashutosh but only time will tell if he could replicate Ashutosh’s performance. His inexperience can be exploited by the opponents. We should wait and watch how Dylan Fox's and Benjamin Lambot's exit will impact them. Their results lie upon how their youngsters and new incomings perform.

PROBABLE FINISH

With Khalid and a good looking squad, we can expect wonders. Minimum expectations are 5-6 place in point table. But all lies on how their youngsters and new incomings perform. Defenders should be conscious while attackers should be aggressive. They should find an Indian playmaker like Apuia to connect with the attack and defence. Then things will be smooth and they will be able to get a top 4 spot.

MATCH REPORT: INDIA W vs IRAN W

By Jeremiah Prince 21 January 2022 India faced against Iran in match number 2 of WAC 2022. Debutants Iran managed to hold down two time runners up India in a goalless draw. This match gave a mixed feeling to Indian fans. It was India's first match in WAC after 19 years. The Indians were high on confidence that they will succeed in getting three points. But with Iran's good defending, they managed to restrict India to a draw. Also their goalkeeper Koodaei performed very well. Now let’s take a deep look into yesterday's match. INDIA'S CHANCES In the initial minutes of the game Iranians made some quick moments and even hit the Indian crossbar. But within 20 minutes Indians were able to settle and control the game. India dominated the game thereafter, and as a result Indian ladies got many chances but they lacked the final touch. Indumati got the first chance in the 24th minute but her half volley flew over the bar. After that Manisha got couple of c

Lot's of Ups and Downs for the Bengaluru FC in the First Half of the League. Here is our review on the Blues performance so far.

By Saurabh 13 January 2022 Bengaluru FC, repeating itself from the previous season. The performance of the team has shown no improvement having lost 4 matches, drawn 4 and won 2. They are currently placed 9th in the points table. We all know that Bengaluru FC from past had always performed well, and because of their performance in 2019-20 season, they had the chance to play in AFC Cup. After major changes, Bengaluru prepared for the league early. All the foreign players left except Cleiton Silva.  They started well with winning two matches to make it to the group stages from the preliminary round. But they lacked coordination which was exploited by the opponents. START OF THE LEAGUE They started on high note as they won 4-2 against Northeast United FC. It was a great start but after that they lost 4 matches and dropped points in rest of the matches due to poor attacking and missed opportunities. CHHETRI AND BFC Whenever Chhetri's name is heard, i

No More a Mid-Table Team! Here is our half-season review on Jamshedpur FC.

By Jeremiah Prince 21 January 2022 Since its inception in 2017, Jamshedpur FC is always a mid-table team. Though they had some good players they weren't able to reach the top 4. But this season, things changed. With good additions and with a good tactician in helm, they are looking very good so far and are now a serious contender for the ISL. Here is an article based on their performance so far.  With 4 Wins, 4 Draws and 2 Loses from 10 matches, Jamshedpur is second placed in league after 10 matches. START OF LEAGUE They retained three of their foreigners, Valskis, Lima and Hartley while leaving out the rest four. They brought in Murray and Eli Sabia from the league and experienced Greg Stewart from Rangers. They also brought some experienced Indians and young talents to bolster their squad.  They started their league with a 1-1 draw against Kolkata Giants, East Bengal. A magnificent victory over last season play-off team, FC Goa which boosted them for their upcoming fi
